Cañon City has a substantial amount of tourism activity annually, including attractions such as rafting on the Arkansas River, the Royal Gorge, the Royal Gorge Route Railroad, hiking, biking, angling, dinosaur history and experiences, camping, and more. The City’s old signage did not provide a consistent and recognizable system for visitors to the area and did not direct to their many assets and amenities. Stemming from a concept design that was created by others, we were responsible for refining the original signage concept design. Design components supplied from this design were minimal and did not include all the necessary sign types that were required for the wayfinding system to function. The original concept also did not meet the Department of Transportation’s standards for visibility.

Our team developed a new signage design that transformed the original concept into an aesthetic and functional signage system that effectively directs people to destinations. We refined sign dimensions and graphic layouts of messages to meet visibility standards for vehicular, pedestrian, and bicycle signage. We also developed additional sign types that were not included in the original design, programmed all final sign locations and message schedules, and prepared documentation of the signage for final bidding and implementation.
